Sam Altshuler Stuns World No. 3 to Claim ITTF Para Challenger Spokane Title

Spokane, Washington — Sam Altshuler pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament by claiming the men's singles Class 6 title at ITTF Para Challenger Spokane, defeating the heavily favored Simion Bobi — currently ranked world No. 3 — in a 3-1 victory (12-10, 4-11, 13-11, 12-10) in the championship final. The final was decided by narrow margins, with Altshuler winning the first game by just two points, losing the second, then surging to a thrilling 13-11 victory in game 3 before closing out the match 12-10 in game 4. The American player delivered a masterclass in clutch performance under pressure. "It was a tough match in the final, and it was great to get it done. This is my first Challenger gold medal, and it means a lot," Altshuler said after the win. The maiden Challenger title earned Altshuler a crucial 300-point boost toward his international para world rankings, propelling him from outside the top 10 to just outside the top five, settling at world No. 6 heading into ITTF Para Elite Spokane, which begins August 11. "If you told me two years ago, I never would have thought I would be at this level. I want to thank everyone supporting me and to thank my mom and dad for helping me throughout my whole journey in table tennis," Altshuler added. His next scheduled events include ITTF Para Elite Spokane (starting August 11), followed by the ITTF World Para Circuit event in Yvelines, France, in September, and culminating at the ITTF Para World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, from November 13–19.
